Cause and Effect in European Politics and Law

Dirty election campaign with green freshness

Adelina Marini, June 4, 2009

The lack of money for active election campaign, provoked the first, although rudimentary, form of civil society in Bulgaria, to use its juvenile enthusiasm to appeal for support for the European elections on Sunday. This is the new formation the Greens which gathered in front the of the Council of Ministers building to call on people to vote for them. The Greens don't have money for a real campaign because they have not participated in political life so far and have no right to budgetary subsidy. They can only rely on the legitimate ways for donations.

The Greens became very popular in January when they organised large-scale protests against the illegitimate exchange of state forests for private lands. These protests led to changes in the relevant legislation.
