Adelina Marini
European Commission First Vice President Frans #Timmermans is reporting on the rule of law procedure against #Poland in the civil liberties, justice and home affairs committee of the European Parliament. Stay tuned for live updates
22 March 2017 16:46
Adelina Marini #Timmermans: The Commission believes that there still is a systemic threat to the rule of law in #Poland which has to be removed urgently
22 March 2017 16:47
Adelina Marini #Poland #Timmermans: With huge regret I have to say that the response we received by Poland doesn't alleviate our concerns. Sadly, new concerns have emerged
22 March 2017 16:49
Adelina Marini #Poland #Timmermans: We're concerned of the proposed reform of the Supreme Judicial Council. Any reform must respect the division of powers and the independence of the judiciary
22 March 2017 16:50
Adelina Marini #Poland #Timmermans: The very functioning of the EU single market is endangered if in a single member state the rule of law is not respected
22 March 2017 16:51
Adelina Marini #Poland #Timmermans: I believe it is not too late to change course and avoid more damage
22 March 2017 16:52
Adelina Marini BREAKING! #Timmermans: The tone of the Polish government has hardened. Therefore I think it is time the member states to get involved in the debate. I propose to the Presidency to raise the issue at its best convenience in the General Affairs Council
22 March 2017 16:53
Adelina Marini #Poland #ruleoflaw Birgit Sippel (S&D, Germany): It's evident that we have no powers to do anything. For the future we have to put the respect of the rule of law as a condition for the distribution of the EU funds
22 March 2017 16:59
Adelina Marini #Poland Helga Stevens (ECR, Belgium): The Polish government clearly showed that the Commission recommendations are anti-Constitutional
22 March 2017 17:01
Adelina Marini #Poland Stevens: ECR views Frans Timmermans's comments as a violation of the principles of subsidiarity. All member states must be treated equally. We didn't hear from the Commission when Germany put on trial a comedian on a request by Erdogan
22 March 2017 17:03
Adelina Marini #Poland Sophie in 't Veld (ALDE, The Netherlands): The next step, Mr Commissioner, is to trigger Article 7. Do not avoid your own responsibility
22 March 2017 17:05
Adelina Marini #Poland Malin Bjork (far left, Sweden): Another issue is the trimming of human rights. When citizens rebelled the government responded with authoritarian measures by curtailing the right to gather. I want to also ask what are we going to do with neighbouring Hungary?
22 March 2017 17:08
Adelina Marini Michal Boni (EPP, Poland): We see violations of many of the European values in #Poland, #Hungary and other countries
22 March 2017 17:13
Adelina Marini Marek Jurek (ECR, #Poland): The Commission actions are legally unjustified. You didn't react when recently France drafted a legislation attacking the pro-life circles (against abortion). This is an example of violation of human rights
22 March 2017 17:18
Adelina Marini #Poland Frank Engel (EPP, Luxembourg): I'm always surprised by the conservatives who rather defend the human rights of the non-borns instead of those who are already born. We cannot forever avoid using the only instrument we have - Article 7. What is happening in Poland and in Hungary is a change of the state
22 March 2017 17:21
Adelina Marini #Poland #Timmermans: It's interesting how those who are criticising us on whether we have the legal justification to take action never mention the contents of our criticism. Several constitutional judges have been appointed in violation of the Constitution. It's clear that the government is still refusing to publish the rulings of the Constitutional Tribunal which is their obligation, according to the Polish Constitution
22 March 2017 17:33
Adelina Marini #Poland #Timmermans again reads out Article 2 for those who doubt the Commission's powers to undertake action
22 March 2017 17:34
Adelina Marini #Poland #Timmermans: We need the member states if we want this to function. I'm tempted to trigger Article 7 and be the hero of the day but at this stage I have to do everything possible to convince other players that we have to do everything possible
22 March 2017 17:37
Adelina Marini #Poland #Timmermans: At this stage I'd like us to tread carefully to see to what extent are the member states willing us to move in this debate. The triggering of Article 7 will not help us in the wider context
22 March 2017 17:43
Adelina Marini #Poland #Timmermans: In every country there are problems with the rule of law. No country is above the law. But it is never an excuse that someone else is doing the same

In its latest #CVM report on #Bulgaria the @EU_Commission justifies the lack of progress with the political instability earlier this year. The government, however, is praised for its continuity and ambition for reforms and the responsibility for the non-implementation is transferred to the parliament. Bulgaria is still far from fulfilling the benchmarks can be concluded from the report, which you can find here euinsi.de/xN16
