#euco #MFF At 1400 CET the European Parliament will hear @BarrosoEU and @euHvR on the deal for the 2014-2020 Multiannual Financial Framework. That hearing could show the moods in the Europarliament which is has a key saying on the deal. So far, the signals from Strasbourg are not encouraging that the deal will be approved. For live updates, tune in at 1400 on this website.
18 February 2013 12:37
Adelina Marini #euco #MFF Before the beginning of the hearing a MEP pointed out that on such an important issue it would have been better Herman Van Rompuy to be heard by the entire European Parliament not only by the Conference of Presidents. The answer was that in order for this to happen, the next plenary session must be waited in March which is too late given the haste the deal to be approved.
18 February 2013 14:12
Adelina Marini #euco #MFF The deal as a whole is good for Europe, @euHvR said. This is a realistic and modernised budget oriented toward pressing needs, he added.
18 February 2013 14:15
Adelina Marini #euco #MFF More Europe doesn't mean more money, the European Council President claims. 37.5% is the increase for the Erasmus programme compared to the previous multiannual framework. In the end of the period there will be an increase by 40% of the spending on innovation, Herman Van Rompuy reported. It is a delusion the deal to be called a cut of the budget when we are proposing to invest more in growth than the current framework.
18 February 2013 14:21
Adelina Marini #euco #MFF I hope we will be able to reach an agreement on the basis of facts and numbers, called Herman Van Rompuy in his statement for the MEPs.
18 February 2013 14:28
Adelina Marini #euco A major element of the #MFF is flexibility, said Jose Manuel Barroso. The gap of 21.5 billion euros between commitments and payments will provide specific and maximum flexibility. Words Herman Van Rompuy used as well only without the figures. That gap is the most criticised element of the budget by the European Parliament.
18 February 2013 14:40
Adelina Marini #euco #MFF The last European Council was European only by name. This more a market place which has adopted the lowest budget in its history, @EPPGroup President Joseph Daul said.
18 February 2013 14:42
Adelina Marini #euco #MFF In Europe egoism of member states is prevailing. I'm disappointed by many heads of state who refused to support the need of added value for Europe. Joseph Daul added. We, the European institutions, do not work as we should. You should speak more to the European Parliament, he said and was applauded.
18 February 2013 14:46
Adelina Marini #euco #MFF Joseph Daul recalled the deficits of the budgets for 2012 and 2013 and explained that this was the result of flexibility.
18 February 2013 14:48
Adelina Marini #euco #MFF We don't need to be Keynesians to say that this budget is pro-cyclical, said Hannes Swoboda (Austria), leader of the group of Socialists & Democrats.
18 February 2013 14:51
Adelina Marini #euco Concerns are growing of a flow of poor Bulgarians and Romanians but neither Mr Farage nor others show signs of solidarity. We cannot tackle poverty, Hannes Swoboda said.
18 February 2013 14:54
Adelina Marini #euco @VerhofstadtGuy, leader of the group of Liberals in the Europarliament, praised Herman Van Rompuy for succeeding to ensure unanimity in a council of 27. He recalled the words of Tony Blair after the deal for the current framework when he said "Never again". We automatically copy-paste the frameworks, Mr Verhofstadt added.
18 February 2013 14:58
Adelina Marini #euco #MFF With the previous framework were agreed 41 derrogations, rebates. In this framework 53 exceptions have been agreed. This is what is agreed, the former Belgian prime minister said.
18 February 2013 15:00
Adelina Marini #euco #MFF On behalf of the group pf Greens and the European Free Alliances was called to be endorsed work with the 2013 budget and negotiations to be held again in 2014.
18 February 2013 15:03
Adelina Marini #euco #MFF Let's not turn into a laughing-stock by holding a secret ballot in the European Parliament, called Martin Callanan (Britain).
18 February 2013 15:11
Adelina Marini #euco #MFF Martin Callanan warned that if the Parliament declared war to the Council everyone would suffer.
18 February 2013 15:12
Adelina Marini #euco #MFF @BarrosoEU said he is against work on an annual basis as called the group of Greens/EFA because in this way an agreement about the legal foundation for investments from January 1st will be impossible. Barroso called for serious negotiations with the Council. Please take into account the principles of European responsibility, the European Commission chief invited the MEPs.
18 February 2013 15:22
Adelina Marini #euco #MFF We cannot turn this into a debate between the responsible and irresponsible, Herman Van Rompuy said. This is about a compromise between national and European interests.
18 February 2013 15:28
Adelina Marini #euco #MFF I would also like a bigger budget, but even in the European Parliament you will be unable to reach an agreement on a twofold bigger budget. With a budget of 1% the problems of unemployment and growth cannot be solved. We want to make a contribution to the policies that are led on national level, the chief of the European Council explained.
18 February 2013 15:31
Adelina Marini #euco #MFF I call on the European Parliament to think twice before dashing into policy of annual budgets because this approach will not provide any perspective, Mr Van Rompuy said.
18 February 2013 15:38
Adelina Marini #euco #MFF Isabelle Durant opposed Barroso and Van Rompuy saying that it is possible to live without the multiannual financial framework.
18 February 2013 15:45
Adelina Marini #euco #MFF I disagree that the agreed budget is pro-European. What has been agreed is the smallest common denominator, Ivailo Kalfin (S&D, Bulgaria), rapporteur on the MFF said.
18 February 2013 15:47
Adelina Marini #euco #MFF Only for the eurozone countries will be needed 21 billion euros to tackle youth unemployment, while 6 billion is envisaged for 7 years. What will the outcome be, Mr Kalfin asked.
18 February 2013 15:49
Adelina Marini #euco #MFF If we want to have flexibility we will need less decisions with unanimity in the Council, Ivailo Kalfin believes.
18 February 2013 15:51
Adelina Marini #euco #MFF Regarding the criticisms against the announced decision by the European Parliament to give its position on the financial framework via a secret ballot, Reimer Boge (EPP, Germany), the other rapporteur on the MFF, recalled that the Council also takes its decision behind closed doors and secretly from society.
18 February 2013 15:56
Adelina Marini #euco #MFF The hearing of Jose Manuel Barroso and Herman Van Rompuy in the Conference of Presidents of the EP. It is hard to conclude how exactly will the position of the EP evolve. Most big political groups criticised the budget they claim was cut and the Greens even proposed to endorse annual budgets and hold another round of negotiations in 2014. The denouement is yet to come.

The letter triggering #Article50 was handed by UK Ambassador to the EU Tim Barrow to European Council President Donald Tusk. Thus the negotiations on Brexit have officially begun

European Commission First Vice President Frans #Timmermans is reporting on the rule of law procedure against #Poland in the civil liberties, justice and home affairs committee of the European Parliament. Stay tuned for live updates
22 March 2017 16:46
Adelina Marini #Poland #Timmermans: In every country there are problems with the rule of law. No country is above the law. But it is never an excuse that someone else is doing the same

The #Eurogroup finance ministers are gathering today for their regular meeting with a main issue on the agenda the 2nd review of the 3rd bailout programme for #Greece. There is another issue hanging in the air, which is not on the agenda - will the Dutch Finance Minister Jeroen Dijsselbloem remain on the position as chair of the Eurogroup since his party sustained huge losses at the parliamentary elections in the Netherlands last week. For now, a Tusk-effect is not visible but all minsters praise Dijsslbloem as a brilliant chief of the Eurogroup. Everyone, however, refuse to forecast whether he will stay even after his mandate runs out in January. EU economic affairs commissioner Pierre Moscovici hinted something in that direction saying that Mr Dijsselbloem is very competent and is very well aware of the Greek dossier. This is a hint that the next is yet to get acquainted with this dossier and there might not be sufficient time for that
