EU foreign ministers are meeting today in #Malta to discuss future relations with #Turkey after the controversial referendum there. The ministers were cautious before the start of the informal meeting and no one spoke clearly about a suspension of the accession negotiations with Turkey. Some of them are very worried by the situation with human rights and democracy, like Dutch Minister Bert Koenders. His Luxembourg colleague Jean Asselborn said that free, democratic and rule of law Turkey is dead and the EU has to find a way to work with the new Turkey. Finland's Foreign Minister Timo Soini said he was very worried by the situation of democracy and human rights. What is needed is to obey the rule of law, he said. Slovenia Foreign Minster Karl Erjavec focused on the migration deal with Turkey. His Hungarian counterpart Peter Szijjarto spoke directly: We need Turkey because of the migration deal, which means we forget about the rest. If we want to bash Turkey, then we have to forget about the migration deal. Slovakia's Miroslav Lajcak disagreed. According to him, EU membership is a matter of values and these values need to be supported by concrete actions. According to him, Turkey needs EU more than vise versa. To the Czech top diplomat Lubomir Zaoralek, the only red line is the death penalty. Lithuania's Linas Linkevicius thinks that sanctions and pressure don't work. What needs to be done is to talk and listen. Enlargement Negotiations Commissioner Johannes Hahn said the current situation is unsustainable and the EU needs to think what the shape of future relations should be. EU High Representative Federica Mogherini said the EU needs a serious, in-depth, frank and sincere discussion on Turkey. During the meeting the ministers will talk to their Turkish counterpart and in the evening Ms Mogherini will have a bilateral meeting with him.

#EUCO #Brexit Negotiations on the future EU-UK relations can start only when an agreement has been reached on the following issues: guarantees for the citizens and their families that are effective, enforceable, non-discriminatory and comprehensive, and which should be accompanied by simple and smooth administrative procedures; agreement on the UK's financial commitments; and finally settling the issue with Ireland. This is said in the inivitation letter of European Council President Donald Tusk to the leaders of the member states, who are gathering tomorrow for a special summit to agree the negotiating positions of the 27 for UK's exit
